Nothing can be as bad as the future you imagine.
“We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.”
These wise words come from Seneca.
And he was right.
Your brain loves the future
The future you imagine is a construct of your mind.
Your brain is a thought-producing machine.
It loves to think.
Especially about the future.
As a living being, imagining what might happen next is incredibly useful.
But as a human being, it can become a problem when your thoughts do you more harm than good.
For example, worrying about things you cannot control:
- What will happen to the economy, the world, and to me in the coming years?
- This pain could be something serious. What if it’s cancer?
- What if I have another panic attack next week?
- What if I don’t have enough money when I’m older and then become ill?
The answer to all these questions is always the same:
Nobody knows.
It’s beyond your control.
There is nothing wrong with preparing for the future. But worrying about the same things over and over again does nothing but create problems.
Your body is here. Your mind is already in tomorrow.
We can only ever live in the present.
And yet our minds spend an astonishing amount of time in a world that doesn’t even exist yet.
The future.
A future that may never happen the way we imagine it.
Many people suffer because of things that will never happen.
How crazy is that?
Maya, the illusion of the mind
In yoga, there is a concept called Maya – illusion.
The future we imagine exists, at first, only in our minds.
Our brain is a powerful prediction machine.
It uses past experiences, learned patterns, and expectations to predict what might happen next.
Here’s the thing:
You never experience the future. You only experience your idea of the future.
And the more often you repeat certain thoughts, worries, and expectations, the more familiar they become.
Until you begin to believe they are true.
And experience them as if they were.
The way you think about the world shapes the way you experience it.
The way you think about yourself shapes the way you experience yourself.
Step out of the movie in your mind
Naked yoga is a way to step out of this movie playing in your mind.
And to become the director of your own life again.
It’s not simply about taking off your clothes.
It’s about freeing yourself from the grip of your thoughts.
You begin to understand that you suffer because you hold on to certain ideas, expectations, and familiar stories.
What if you didn’t believe every thought?
What would happen if you tried a different path?
Instead of thinking:
“This is how it’s going to be.”
you could say:
“My brain is creating this scenario right now.”
What might happen if you simply noticed these thoughts without automatically believing them?
And instead of worrying about the future, you could ask yourself:
What can I do right now, today, to prepare for tomorrow?
Practicing naked yoga means learning to live in the present and taking your life back into your own hands.
I’m here to help you.
Your Mindfulness Moment for This Sunday
Take one minute for yourself today.
Sit down. Close your eyes for a moment and simply observe your thoughts.
Whenever a thought about the future appears, ask yourself:
Then slowly breathe in and breathe out.
Feel your body.
Notice your surroundings.
And ask yourself:
You may discover something surprisingly simple:
Right now, many of the things you are worrying about aren’t here at all.
There is only this moment.
Yours, Elke 🥰
