Taking a Pause

In bullfighting, there is a moment when things become truly dangerous for the matador.

As long as the bull is enraged and merely reacting, the matador has the upper hand. But sometimes it happens that the bull suddenly appears completely calm.

Remaining motionless, the bull enters a state in which it regains its power and strength. When it finds its “querencia,” it gathers its energy and loses its fear.

Most people behave like an angry bull. They react with a mixture of anger and fear to what happens within them and around them and lose their balance. Struggling and fighting until complete exhaustion.


The sacred pause as fertile ground for wise action.

When we learn to pause, our life changes.

We step out of our habitual, reflexive reactions.

We recognize that we are caught in old stories. (Your brain loves to tell you stories that often have little to do with reality.)

Practicing regular pauses interrupts deeply ingrained interaction patterns. You can make wiser decisions.

It helps you see clearly again when you have lost yourself in your thoughts and emotions.


How can you integrate the sacred pause into your daily life?

Choose three or four activities that you do every day.

For example: brushing your teeth, getting up, going to bed, walking through your front door for the first time, checking emails, arriving at work, etc.

Explore moments of pausing at least three to four times a day.

Interrupt whatever you are doing, sit down or remain still. If possible, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. With every exhale, let go of all worries and thoughts about what you plan to do next.

Relax with each breath out.

While you remain in the pause, pay attention to what you can perceive within yourself. Can you simply allow whatever is happening inside you?
