What I Learned from an Old Man

by  Elke Lechner

Do you know Beppo, the street sweeper, from Michael Ende's book Momo?

He was a small, elderly man with white hair and a hunched back. His job was to sweep the streets every single day.

Doesn't exactly sound like an amazing life, does it?

But there was something special about him:

Most of the time, he was happy and content.

Not because he had a fantastic job or was particularly good-looking.

But because he had learned to live life in a very special way.

And we can learn to do the same!

One day, he shared his secret with Momo, his best friend:

When you're standing in front of an endlessly long street, thinking about all the work ahead of you, it's easy to lose heart.

You might even start to feel afraid.

That's why Beppo never thought about the entire street.

He simply focused on the next step, the next breath, and the next sweep of his broom.

And eventually, the whole street was clean. Without rushing. Without stress.

What Can Beppo Teach Us About Life?

5 Tips for a Lighter, Happier Life

1. We often suffer more from our thoughts than from the actual situation.

It's not the long street that exhausts Beppo. It's the thought of having to clean the entire street all at once.

The same is often true of our worries. We think about tomorrow, next week, our health, growing older, and everything that might happen.

We carry the weight of a future that hasn't even arrived yet.

And perhaps never will.

2. Life only happens right now.

Beppo doesn't live in his mind at the end of the street. He's fully present with his next sweep of the broom.

And that's exactly what yoga and mindfulness are all about.

Anger, fear, and sadness often arise when our minds wander into the past or future.

Our brains love doing that.

But what if you could learn to spend more time in the here and now?

3. Small steps can lead to big changes.

You don't have to change your entire life all at once.

Maybe all it takes today is a ten-minute walk, calling someone you care about, or spending five minutes breathing mindfully.

4. Joy comes from the way we do things.

That's what I find especially beautiful about Beppo's story.

He doesn't simply want to get his work over with. He finds joy in the work itself.

And that makes a huge difference.

It's not what we do that matters most, but the attitude we bring to it.

5. If you only focus on the destination, you miss the journey.

And perhaps this is the most important lesson of all.

We often believe that happiness is waiting for us at the end of the road.

When the work is done. When our problems are solved. When we're finally healthy again. When we have more money, more time, or more friends.

But Beppo shows us something different:

Happiness isn't waiting at the end of the road. We can discover it with every single sweep of the broom.

You don't have to solve all of tomorrow's problems today!

And this is where naked yoga comes in.

When you take off your clothes, you can also try letting go of something else:

Your worries. Your expectations. The pressure to always keep going and be strong.

Feel your bare skin, your breath, your body.

Just as it is today. Not as it used to be or as you think it should be.

You don't have to achieve anything. Prove anything. Or hide anything.

Just you. Your body. Your breath. This moment.

Just like Beppo with his broom.

My Wish for Your New Week:

Be like Beppo!

One step at a time. One breath at a time.

And don't forget:

Happiness isn't waiting at the end of the road. Maybe it's already here. Right now! ❤️

I wish you a wonderful week filled with joy, courage, and lightness!

LOVe
Your Elke 😘
